131.4309 Genus Ophrys L.; Sp. Pl. 2: 945, 948 (1753)
Distribution: mostly Mediterranean and Anatolia, few to W-Asia and central Europe. The taxonomy of the genus is very problematic due to many recently described microspecies and various conflicting species concepts. Some authors recognize almost 400 microtaxa. Molecular results indicate that possibly only 10-50 very variable species are involved. We follow here Hennecke (2021) who recognizes 82 species based on molecular results which seems to be a reasonable compromise. Also almost all infraspecific taxa are classified as varieties and not as subspecies.
Species listed in database: 82; hybrids: 456
= Arachnites F.W.Schmidt; Fl. Boem. 1: 74 (1793)
= Myodium Salisb.; Trans. Hort. Soc. 1: 289 (1812)
